Discover the Charm of Cuyama Buckhorn: A Peaceful DESERT Retreat HIDDEN in the Heart of California

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, one of my favorite things about living in California is all of the beautiful destinations, hidden gems and boutique hotels that we have right at our fingertips. Which means, if you’re ever in need of a getaway, there’s no shortage of places to pick from no matter what you’re in the mood for.

And if you just so happen to be in the mood for a quiet desert retreat that’s off the beaten path, well, you’re in luck because I have just the place for you. Say hello to Cuyama Buckhorn.

Nestled in the tranquil landscape of California's Central Coast, located right off Highway 66 in Santa Barbara County’s high desert, Cuyama Buckhorn is a recently (as in 2020) renovated roadside motel with western vibes that provides a quiet escape for travelers seeking a mix of rustic charm, modern comforts, and immersion into quiet desert life. An on-site bar and restaurant offers farm-to-table dining and on any given day you’ll find it being host to everyone from travelers to truckers to locals alike. Though the space is updated it still manages to maintain thoughtful nods to its historical past, with mid-century modern meets western details and small town hospitality that will have you feeling like family when you leave.

Of course the hotel went on my list of places to stay as soon as I found out about it, and when we saw a night available in the prime of 2023’s super bloom season, we immediately snagged it. And I’m so happy we did. This charming roadside retreat ticks all the boxes for a quiet desert escape and is perfect for a quick getaway from LA. It’s fun, quirky and welcoming with plenty to do (should you want it), but it’s also surrounded by the quiet stillness of the desert that is such a welcome respite from the buzz of city life. Wide open spaces stretch before you and the nods to a bygone era of cowboy culture quickly remind you that “You’re not in Kansas (LA) anymore!”. What I especially loved about Cuyama Buckhorn, and what really stood out to me, is how they embraced and honored their history and their past, maintaining valued relationships with the local community, while also welcoming newcomers and visitors, and staying true to their roots while bringing modern comforts and amenities to the space. All around it makes for a truly lovely experience and getaway.

In this post, I’ll share more about why this California retreat should be on your radar, too, and everything you need to know about staying here. Whether you're planning a quick Central Coast getaway or a longer California vacation, Cuyama Buckhorn promises to be the ideal spot for those looking to unwind and reconnect with nature. Keep reading for all the reasons why you should make this boutique hotel your next getaway destination.

A STAY AT CUYAMA BUCKHORN

THE BUCKHORN BACKGROUND

Cuyama Buckhorn is a boutique hotel and retreat located in Santa Barbara County’s high desert, in the scenic Cuyama Valley, just a short drive from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. The property has a rich history dating back to the 1950s when it originally served as a roadside inn during Cuyama’s booming oil town days. Over the years, the property has been transformed and it now serves as a renovated roadside retreat where nostalgic western vibes blend with contemporary comforts for a stylish, modern oasis.

Surrounded by the stunning mountains and rolling hills of the valley, Cuyama Buckhorn is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a little bit of both, you'll definitely find it here.

Accommodations That Blend Comfort and Style

One of the standout features of Cuyama Buckhorn accommodations is its thoughtful designs. The rooms and suites are a blend of mid-century modern with a touch of vintage flair. Each space is equipped with all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay, including plush Brooklinen bedding, spacious bathrooms, and beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

There are a total of 21 rooms at Cuyama Buckhorn, with a few different options available depending on your needs. We personally stayed in one of the king bedrooms which was super spacious and the bed was perfectly comfortable.

I also really loved the property’s grounds and how those were landscaped, from the olive trees (Hello you know I can’t say no to olive trees!) to the fire pits and the pool. It felt like a lovely Mediterranean-adjacent oasis in the desert.

THE DRINKING + DINING SCENE AT CUYAMA BUCKHORN

Ok, I know this is what we’re all really here for (myself included). The food! Spoiler alert- if you love Santa Maria style bbq, then you’re going to love the food here (yes, their Santa Maria tri-tip is unreal).

No stay at Cuyama Buckhorn is complete without experiencing the exceptional dining options available on-site. Everything you’ll need to eat and drink (from coffee to cocktails) can be found right at the hotel, and it’s all pretty darn delicious, which is a good thing since there isn’t much else around (at least restaurant-wise). The Buckhorn’s restaurant is renowned for its delicious farm-to-table dishes, using locally sourced ingredients to create mouthwatering meals. From breakfast to dinner, the menu is designed to showcase the flavors of the region. Since farms and ranches are such a huge part of the surrounding area, it feels really special that they take the time to incorporate and highlight local farms and produce.

We arrived at the hotel early so we actually ended up eating lunch prior to checking in, then got dinner and drinks later that evening, breakfast the next day before we left and, of course, coffee and baked goods in-between. In other words, we tried it all.

For lunch we got their infamous chili and the buckhorn spicy burger (Both were so yummy!). Dinner was the chorizo spiced butternut squash queso (Holy yum! Best believe we licked that plate clean!), the cast iron cornbread (That Cuyama Valley apple and jalapeño chutney though!) and the smokehouse platter (The tri-tip was so good we almost ordered a side of it at breakfast the next morning!). The beverages were also delicious. They have an incredibly well stocked bar so if there’s something you want it’s more than likely that they’ll have it. Also, see what magic they might be brewing up or experimenting with (they were macerating some amazing combinations with locally foraged goods when we were there that they let us try and they were incredible!). We skipped the desserts in favor of s’mores by the fire (they leave complimentary kits in the room).

For breakfast we split the burrito and also grabbed one of the scones (Highly recommend the scones!). They also have specialty lattes (I tried one with their wildflower syrup when we were there), and whatever you do, do not, under any circumstances, skip the chocolate chip cookie. WOW! I want to drive out there just to get one! And they even warm it up for you! I can’t even deal!

Also, a note on food- while the dining at the hotel is great, because there isn’t much else around I definitely recommend bringing some snacks and provisions with you, just in case.

WHAT TO DO IN THE CUYAMA VALLEY AREA

The beauty of Cuyama Buckhorn is not only in the accommodations but also in the outdoor activities and attractions that are easily accessible from the property. Here are just a few things you can enjoy during your stay:

  1. Explore the Cuyama Valley: Take in the stunning vistas of this beautiful valley. The rolling hills, vast open space, and scenic views are perfect for a relaxing drive or hike.

  3. Take a scenic drive on route 33 to Ojai

  4. Enjoy a Wine Tasting: Central California is home to some of the finest wineries in the country. Take a short drive to nearby wine regions, like Santa Maria or the Santa Ynez Valley for a day of wine tasting and scenic vineyard views, or stay local and schedule a wine tasting at Condor’s Hope with farmer-owners of the property where your tasting includes a personal tour of the vineyard, and wine and olive oil tastings paired with homemade appetizers (tastings are generally available Fridays-Sundays and must be booked in advance; they also have various events so be sure to check their events calendar). Another local spot to check out for a wine tasting is Sagebrush Annie’s (reservations required).

  5. Visit the Santa Barbara Pistachio Company to pick up some pistachios (they have them in all sorts of flavors…the lemon and garlic are our favorites); if you go in the spring you’ll see the trees blooming and if you go around the end of September/beginning of October you might be lucky enough to catch their harvest

  6. Hike in Los Padres National Forest, Bitter Creek Wildlife Refuge or Wind Wolves Preserve

  7. Visit the Painted Cave: Just a short drive away, you'll find one of the largest and most impressive rock art sites in North America, Painted Cave. The ancient Chumash paintings are a must-see for history and art enthusiasts.

  8. Visit the animals at Cuyama Oaks Ranch petting zoo

  9. Have an equine experience at Hidden Creek Ranch

  10. Take a class or farm tour at Quail Springs (please note- these tours run from late spring through fall with limited availability and you must register beforehand)

  11. Enjoy sunset sips of Cuyama Beverage Co.’s locally made meads at the Blue Sky Center (must be reserved in advance)

  12. Go Stargazing: With its remote location and minimal light pollution, Cuyama Buckhorn and the surrounding area is a fantastic place for stargazing. You can head to nearby Mt. Pinos to take in the night sky, or simply step outside wherever you are in the Cuyama area. The clear desert skies offer breathtaking views of the stars, planets, and constellations.

  13. Take a guided horseback ride through Los Padres National Forest with Johnston Ranch

  14. Stop for a slice of infamously good pie at The Place

  15. Relax by the Pool: If you're in the mood for a slower-paced day or you want to wind down after a long hike, relax by the hotel’s outdoor pool with a book, or enjoy a refreshing swim in the warm California sun, then dip into the hot tub or unwind in the sauna.
