Indulgent Brandy Alexander Cocktails with Ice Cream: A Decadent Twist on a Classic Cocktail

Today would have been my grandmother’s 106th birthday. I miss her dearly every day, but especially today knowing that her last birthday was the last time I ever got to see her. So I wanted to do something to honor her memory and celebrate her heavenly birthday. For reasons unknown I bypassed the typical birthday cake and somehow arrived at the idea of a celebratory cocktail, despite the fact that Nan didn’t really drink cocktails, or, well, any alcohol for that matter (I’ll never forget the time we had to explain a margarita to her because she had no idea what it was).

Now sure, there was the wine at holidays and big family gatherings, or the occasional dinner out with her sister at which, without fail, they always split the same exact order, a glass of vino and a plate of gnocchi, and, of course, she loved a (mini) negroni after we introduced those to her on her 100th birthday (No time to start drinking cocktails like your 100th birthday, right?!).

But there was specific drink that she would repeatedly bring up from time to time. A Brandy Alexander. Now she’d only really mention it when she was reminiscing on one particular trip that she took with a friend to New York City, in her early twenties. Despite all of New York at their fingertips, the standout memory from that trip somehow always seemed to be the time she sat at her hotel lobby bar, sipping on, you guessed it, a Brandy Alexander. “Oh how I just loved a Brandy Alexander!”, she’d exclaim, followed by a sigh and pause, an indication of silently, longingly remembering a different time, a different place, a different life.

So after years of hearing her repeatedly mention this cocktail, I naturally decided that it was high time to investigate further just exactly what this Brandy Alexander was all about. After all, if it was captivating enough to be a part of a core memory some 80 years later for someone who didn’t really even drink, it was clearly either a very special drink, a very delicious drink or both.

Now, I’m not much of a brandy fan so the thought of blending brandy, crème de cacao and cream together was, well, not all that appealing. But Nan had good taste, and what do I really know about brandy drinks anyways?! So in the name of Nan’s memory, research and to have a little piece of Nan with us during my Mom’s recent birthday celebrations, we made a round of Brandy Alexanders. And wow! All that I have to say is Nan might not have drank a lot, but when she did, she went hard! Ha! These drinks don’t mess around. They are strooooong. Rich, creamy, decadent…but strong. However, I certainly see the appeal of the cocktail as an after dinner treat or an evening night cap and can easily envision them being a prominent part of many a moody, glamorous New York City bar moment back in the prime post-prohibition era. Because when it comes to indulgent creamy brandy cocktails, few are quite as decadent as the Brandy Alexander.

Of course, me being me, I couldn’t help but think “Ok, but what if you could take this beloved classic cocktail to the next level?” and, you know, while we’re at it also maybe make it slightly more enjoyable for those of us who aren’t the biggest brandy fans. Enter the Brandy Alexander with ice cream—a creamy, frozen variation that adds an extra layer of decadence and deliciousness to your cocktail experience.

Now, don’t get it twisted, this is no milkshake. In fact, the consistency is very similar to the original cocktail, but just much colder and much more refreshing to sip on. A Brandy Alexander made with ice cream is simply a luxurious and fun twist on the original and the ultimate indulgence—a drink that feels like a dessert while still offering the classic cocktail experience. It's easy to make, ready in mere minutes, only requires 4 ingredients, is customizable (you can add in additional liquors such as Kahlua and Disaronno for added flavor), and, most importantly, delicious. Thanks to the sugar and vanilla in the ice cream, the drink is also much smoother, sweeter and easier to drink (aka if you were worried about the biting flavor from the brandy, don’t be. You’ll hardly even notice that the brandy is here!). Plus, no ice or cocktail shaker is required to make this version so it’s actually much easier to batch this cocktail, meaning it’s perfect for serving at dinner parties or celebrations, like, you know, birthdays.

I also made a few other minor tweaks for those of us who are brandy-adverse but still want to partake in the Brandy Alexander festivities. Namely, I swapped the ratios for the brandy and crème de cacao and also added a hint of nutmeg to the drink as it’s getting blended, not just as a garnish on top. You’ll still know the brandy is there, but it’s much more of a whisper, a palatable whisper, if you will. However, if you’re a big brandy fan, feel free to add more in. No judgement here.

Either way, whether you’re making this drink for yourself or impressing guests, looking for a unique dessert or a decadent after-dinner treat, this creamy concoction will surely impress. It’s a versatile and crowd-pleasing option that never goes out of style and continues to be a favorite at cocktail parties, festive gatherings, and cozy nights in and is an absolute must-try for anyone who enjoys rich, creamy drinks. So next time you're looking to elevate your cocktail game, be sure to try this frozen Brandy Alexander recipe for a cocktail experience you won’t soon forget.

Now, without further ado, let’s make some Brandy Alexanders in honor of Nan. In this post, we’ll explore the history of the OG drink, how to make a Brandy Alexander cocktail with ice cream, why this variation is so irresistible, and why it’s the perfect choice for your next birthday, celebration, hotel lobby bar beverage or night out in NYC.

Cheers to enjoying something sweet and sophisticated! Cheers to you Nan!

But first…What is a Brandy Alexander?

After my grandmother brought up the Brandy Alexander a few times, I obviously needed to find out more about it. I just had to know more about this cocktail that seemed to have her, a non-drinker, so captivated. What exactly was a Brandy Alexander? What was so special about this drink anyways? Was it something everyone was drinking at that time and who is Alexander anyways? So upon some digging and research, here’s what I’ve found out.

The Brandy Alexander is a classic cocktail that is believed to have been around since the early 20th century. Traditionally, the Brandy Alexander is made with, you guessed it, brandy as the base, along with crème de cacao (a chocolate-flavored liqueur) and heavy cream, which creates a decadent and boozy beverage with hints of chocolate and vanilla. Shaken and served in a cocktail glass and garnished with a sprinkle of nutmeg, it’s smooth, sweet and creamy, making it a favorite among cocktail enthusiasts and occasional drinkers alike.

While the classic recipe is undoubtedly delicious, there’s a fun and, dare I say, even more decadent twist happening in today’s post- swapping out the heavy cream for vanilla ice cream! This seemingly simple change really packs a punch and elevates the drink to a whole other level, transforming the cocktail into a velvety smooth, luxuriously creamy dessert-like experience that’s both indulgent and satisfying. With a perfect balance of sweetness, warmth and richness this beverage is excellent for everything from an after dinner treat to special occasions.

History of the Brandy Alexander

As I continued spiraling down my Nan-inspired Brandy Alexander research journey, I uncovered even more details about the history of this seemingly simple, yet sophisticated and captivating, cocktail. Because who doesn’t love their cocktail with a little side of history?! Turns out, the Brandy Alexander history and origins are a bit hazy, but most accounts trace it back to the early 20th century. One popular theory is that the drink was created in honor of a wedding between royalty in the 1920s, possibly named after Prince Alexander of Teck. Fancy! Another claim is that the Brandy Alexander was a variation of the gin-based Alexander cocktail, which was already a favorite in New York City’s cocktail scene at the time, and could explain why they seemed to be such a hit at the hotel bar where my Grandmother was staying.

Over the years, the Brandy Alexander became a staple of the post-prohibition era, gaining widespread popularity in the 1930s and 1940s. Its creamy, dessert-like quality made it a hit at supper clubs and bars, especially as an after-dinner drink. These days, the classic Brandy Alexander drink is a bit more elusive on bar menus (although I nearly lost it when I spotted it on this menu in Palm Springs and my Mom happened to have a great one at a little sports bar here) and a bit more old-fashioned, but still remains a beloved favorite among cocktail enthusiasts.

Why Make a Brandy Alexander with Ice Cream?

You might be wondering, if the Brandy Alexander is so good, then why swap out the cream for ice cream? The short answer- bringing ice cream into the mix takes the Brandy Alexander from a simple cocktail to an unforgettable dessert drink. The longer answer- for me, personally, there’s a bit more to my reasoning, namely for those of us that aren’t as big of fans of brandy, I wanted a way to make the brandy flavor smoother and more enjoyable, both of which are achieved beautifully thanks to the vanilla and sugar in the ice-cream. The drink is also crisper and cooler, while still maintaining an almost-identical consistency to the OG version. And it’s just a tad sweeter making for more of an overall pleasant sipping experience.

Whether you choose to add a scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream or opt for a unique flavor, this frozen cocktail recipe guarantees a deliciously fun experience. Here’s why else this ice cream twist works so wonderfully:

  • EXTRA CREAMY TEXTURE: While the original Brandy Alexander already has a creamy texture, ice cream takes it to another level, bringing an extra creamy richness to the drink that regular cream just can’t match. The smooth, velvety texture of the ice cream makes it even more indulgent and each sip of the vanilla ice cream cocktails feel like a dessert and a cocktail in one.

  • DELICIOUS FLAVOR: Vanilla ice cream adds a subtle sweetness and a hint of vanilla that blends perfectly with the chocolatey notes from the crème de cacao and the warmth of the brandy. The result is a beautifully balanced drink with deep, comforting flavors and one in which the brandy is part of a balanced flavor profile rather than the standout flavor (which is definitely the move for those of us who aren’t the biggest brandy fans).

  • FROZEN DELIGHT: In warmer months or at a casual gathering, a frozen Brandy Alexander made with ice cream is the perfect way to cool down while enjoying a sophisticated drink.

  • A FUN DESSERT COCKTAIL: This Brandy Alexander version is perfect for anyone who enjoys having dessert and a drink all in one. It’s especially great for holiday parties, dinner gatherings, or when you're craving something special after a meal not only because of how elegant and elevated it is but also because it’s super simple to make, it only requires 4 ingredients and best of all, it can be made it batches, which is always a win for hosting.

STEP 3: TASTE AND ADJUST

Taste your Brandy Alexander and adjust the flavor as needed. If you want it thicker, add more ice cream. If it’s too thick, add a splash of heavy cream or liquor. If it tastes too boozy, add more ice cream or some heavy cream. You get the gist here.

Creative Brandy Alexander VARIATIONS

While a traditional Brandy Alexander made with vanilla ice cream is hard to beat, there are several ways you can experiment to create your own signature twist on this classic cocktail. Here’s how to make brandy alexander variations:

  • CHOCOLATE BRANDY ALEXANDER

For an even more decadent version of these ice cream cocktails, use chocolate ice cream in place of vanilla and blend in a tablespoon (or more) of chocolate sauce/syrup. Then top the finished cocktail with a drizzle of chocolate in place of the grated nutmeg. The chocolate makes this an even richer and more decadent dessert-like treat and the chocolatey twist pairs beautifully with the crème de cacao and brandy. So perfect for any chocolate lovers!

  • COFFEE BRANDY ALEXANDER

Try swapping the vanilla ice cream with coffee-flavored ice cream. The deep, roasted flavors of coffee will add complexity to the flavor profile and a slight bitterness that will balance out the sweetness.

  • NUTTY BRANDY ALEXANDER

If you’re nuts for nuts, consider using hazelnut ice cream and/or adding a splash of frangelico (hazelnut liqueur) to the mix for a nutty twist. You could also add a handful of crushed hazelnuts, or other nut of your choice, into the blender for a nutty flavor profile. You could even garnish the milkshake with a few whole nuts for extra texture.

  • FLAVORED BRANDY ALEXANDER

Try experimenting with flavored brandy, such as apricot or cherry, in place of regular brandy or add a shot (ounce) of an additional liquor that will enhance the flavor profile, something like a Kahula, Mr. Black, Frangelico, Disaronno, Chambord or Cointreau.

  • NON-DAIRY BRANDY ALEXANDER

Use vegan or dairy-free ice cream options in place of regular ice cream.

  • BRANDY ALEXANDER AFFOGATO

After blending together the cocktail ingredients, pour into a chilled glass then top with a shot of espresso. This will give you a coffee-flavored kick that complements the rich, creamy nature of the drink so perfectly.

  • BRANDY ALEXANDER FLOAT

For a fun Brandy Alexander twist, turn your drink into a float. Instead of blending everything together, add chilled brandy and crème de cacao to a chilled glass. Add in a scoop (or two) of ice cream, then top it off with cream soda (soda water or sparkling water also work well) for a fizzy finish.

Tips for the Perfect Brandy Alexander with Ice Cream

  • USE HIGH-QUALITY INGREDIENTS: Since this drink has minimal ingredients, the flavor is heavily dependent on each individual one. For the best results, opt for premium liquor to elevate overall flavor and premium ice cream for the richest, creamiest taste.

  • LET THE ICE CREAM SOFTEN SLIGHTLY: I like to use ice cream that has softened ever so slightly as I find that it blends the most seamlessly and results in the smoothest, creamiest drink. I leave it on the counter for no more than 5-10 minutes before using (you don't want it to be too soft, or the consistency of the drink will be too thin). However, if you prefer I thicker drinker, use ice cream straight from the freezer.

  • DOUBLE THE NUTMEG, DOUBLE THE FUN: I like to blend nutmeg into the drink AND add it on top. While it’s not necessary to do both, I think it really enhances the flavor. And hey, why not?! You’ve already got the nutmeg out so you might as well add some to the drink.

  • CHILL YOUR GLASS: A chilled glass helps keep your Brandy Alexander nice and cold, enhancing the creamy experience.

  • SERVE WITH GARNISH: A dusting of nutmeg is traditional, but get creative with your toppings! You can sprinkle some cinnamon, chocolate shavings, or even add whipped cream to enhance the presentation.

  • ADJUST FLAVOR PROFILES: I find that I enjoy this drink best with a 3-2-1 ratio, meaning 3 parts (scoops) ice cream, 2 parts (ounces) crème de cacao and one half parts (ounces) brandy. However, feel free to tweak it to fit your own taste buds. If it’s too sweet, add a little more brandy or some heavy cream. If you want more of a chocolate flavor add more crème de cacao. If you want it boozier, add more brandy, and reversely, if you want it less boozy add more ice cream or even some heavy cream.
