Dress & Dine: The Burgary and Garfunkel's

Remember the other day when I rambled on and on about not getting stuck going to your typical spots, or, in the case of New Yorkers, not getting stuck in your neighborhood? Well, this is why.

Tucked away on an unassuming but busy LES (that's Lower East Side for all my non-New York friends) street there's an outpost serving up what just may be some of the best burgers in NYC. As the name implies, The Burgary serves up all kinds of burgers, including build-your-own (which is the route I opted for, going with a burger topped with coleslaw, bacon bourbon jam and carolina bbq sauce), as well as a variety of appetizers (we tried the tater tot nachos...yum!), other sandwiches and, of course, some ridiculous shakes (the speciality shake changes every day....I was really hoping to try their s'mores one, but the day we went they had cherry vanilla, which wasn't half bad, either).

But the true gem of this spot can't be found on the menu. Nope, it's found in the only place you'd expect to find a gem, a bank vault. Yes, you read that correctly. In the back of the Burgary there's an old bank vault and if you walk through it, you'll think you've walked back in time, figuratively speaking, of course. Realistically, you've stepped into Garfunkel's, a speakeasy with Gatsby-style vibes. There's an extensive cocktail menu, but trust me when I say you don't even need it. The bartenders here are so good they know what to make you without you even asking. Trust me. I, along with everyone in the bar at the time, would know.

Burgers, shakes, tater tot nachos, drink reading (Ya know, like mind readers, except with cocktails??!) bartenders, time travel, bars in bank vaults....Obviously, I need to step out of my routine, and neighborhood, more often...
