Crochet Top Outfit FOR SUMMER

I’ll be the first to admit it. I was slow to join the current crochet craze. Perhaps it’s because crochet makes me think (fondly I might add) of the knit blankets my Grandma always kept in the den, or perhaps it was because of the visions I had of me putting on a crochet piece and immediately looking like a boho babe from the 60’s (nothing wrong with boho, or the 60’s, just not quite my jam). But this new Brochu Walker top immediately made that fear null and void. It looks neither boho nor like it’s from the 60’s. And just like that I’m suddenly very on board with all things crochet (somewhere out there is a grandma who would be incredibly proud of my current crochet browser history)…

Below, I’m sharing a few of the tips I’m implementing for styling crochet tops to keep things chic and elevated plus a few crochet top outfit ideas for summer.

HOW TO STYLE A Crochet Top

There’s a few things to be aware of when styling a crochet top to keep things looking more chic and less like, well, you know, something your grandma knit. Of course, these are my own personal opinions and preferences, you do what works best for you and your style, but wanted to share more about how I approach crochet when I’m working with my own personal style and outfits-

NEUTRAL TONES // Stick with neutral tones. I know, I know. You’re probably thinking duh! I already do that. But it’s especially key when working with pieces like crocheted tops. Neutral colors keep things looking more chic, classic and timeless and less boho from the 60’s.

SOMETHING TAILORED // While there are some cropped crochet tops, generally most crochet tops are a bit more oversized and flowy, so, as a general rule with anything oversized, I like to balance it out with another more tailored and/or form fitting piece. For example, in today’s post, I paired my crochet top with trousers.

MINIMAL ACCESSORIES // Let the crochet do the talking and keep other accessories minimal and/or neutral. A bold hoop, simple shoes, a dainty bracelet, you get the idea…

AVOID (TOO MUCH) FRINGE // This may be an unpopular opinion but…there’s a time and place for fringe and crochet tops isn’t it. I said what I said. Let’s keep the fringe to a minimal (or nonexistent) and keep our outfits looking more chic and less boho, shall we?

CROCHET TOP OUTFIT IDEAS FOR SUMMER

MATCHING SETS // One of the easiest to pull off a crochet top in an effortlessly chic manner is in the form of a matching set, be it matching pants or a matching skirt. I’m telling you, you just can’t go wrong here.

WITH TROUSERS // A great way to make your crochet top look elevated and timeless; stick with something lightweight, such as linen

AS A SWIMSUIT COVER-UP // A more casual option, but an oversized crochet top is the perfect beach day swimsuit coverup (and then just swap your swimsuit for trousers to make it more dinner appropriate after a day at the beach)

OVER A SLIP DRESS // Layer a crochet top over a slip dress or even pair it with a slip skirt for a more dressy and elevated yet simple and summery look

WITH SHORTS // If you want to pair your top with shorts, opt for something a little be longer and more tailored, preferably in a material that isn’t denim, and avoid frays, fringes and rips to keep things looking chic and elevated
